Complex Navigation

Module: Basic Navigation Concepts

Overview

This module explores fundamental navigation elements used in complex learning environments.

Navigation vs. Content: Distinguish elements that help you move (navigation) from elements that teach (content).

Key Navigation Elements

Breadcrumb Navigation

Shows your location (e.g., Home > Course > Module) and allows backtracking.

Course Map/Dashboard

Visual overview of modules, status (locked/available/completed), and prerequisites. Accessible via sidebar or Course Dashboard link.

A good map shows all modules, status, prerequisites, and allows access to available modules.
Progress Indicators

Show completion status (e.g., progress bars, checkmarks, sidebar indicators).

Prerequisite Notifications

Inform which modules must be finished to unlock others (shown on dashboard).

They ensure background knowledge, guide learning sequence, and prevent confusion. Completing a module automatically unlocks the next available ones.

Interactive Navigation Elements

Tooltips

Provide extra info on hover/click. Example: Hover here.

Modal Dialogs

Popup windows for extra info or confirmations.

Navigation Buttons

Used to move between pages/sections (e.g., Next, Previous, Back, Continue). May be disabled until conditions are met.
